Outdoor Classroom/Environmental Garden
The Vincent Outdoor Classroom/Environmental Garden has transformed a barren central courtyard into a unique learning environment. The garden was designed around the Nine Proposed Academic Standards for Environment and Ecology.
Built through PTA funding & donations from local businesses and volunteer efforts, it consists of an Arbor and Stage, a Nurse Log Bed, Native Shrub Bed, Pond, Wind Garden, Herb Garden, Compost Bin, Crop Beds, Cistern, Bird Feeders, Rain Gauge and Thermometer.
Students give up recess to move mulch, clean and weed the beds, and plant shrubs, vegetables and flowers. They have done research projects on the quality of the pond water, what type of fish to purchase, and different weed control alternatives.
Kindergarteners plant seeds of sunflowers, lettuce, spinach, pumpkins, tomatoes, and peppers in the spring. In the fall, the sunflowers are harvested and the heads used in centers for fine motor skills.
The pumpkins are harvested and distributed to the classes for fall decorating. Lettuce is picked and bagged for the local food bank. The students keep the bird feeders full and feed the goldfish in the pond. |
